Warm & Bright

Introduce students to the traditions of candlemaking and enhance their understanding of the pioneer harvest season with exploration of the House and its gardens

Christmas at the Laird's
Before there was a Christmas tree, how did people decorate for the holidays? Why do we decorate with evergreens? Help an 1830's family decorate and prepare for the holidays with evergreen boughs, a kissing ball and help Cook bake some holiday treats.

A Taste of the Past
Students gather in the Macpherson House kitchen, under the Cook's direction, they prepare chicken soup over the hearth, identifying ingredients while cooking. Students tour the House to learn about life in a grand pioneer-era home, and explore living conditions, meals and family life.

The Secret of Willow Castle
Classes reading The Secret of Willow Castle while studying pioneer life in eastern Ontario will have the chance to explore the real-life setting of the book. They will examine the dress of the period, tour Mr. Macpherson's house, examine tools of daily life bathing, sleeping arrangements, meals, etc) and walk the site of the mill and the fabled willow tree castle.

Art and Architecture of Macpherson House
Students identify elements of visual design in a heritage house, while observing the form, shape, symmetry, and balance of Macpherson House's architecture.

Grade 6-8 Fee: $2.50/student
